Tips For Writing All Your Skills On A Resume

If you are trying to get a new job, you likely have to brush up your resume and get it so that it is as recent as possible. This is important because it will allow you to stand out when recruiters are going through stacks of resumes and therefore increase your chances of getting an interview. However, you might have a bunch of new skills that you don't have on your resume yet. Here are some tips for displaying these skills on your resume so that they look as good as possible and so that they are as effective as possible.

1. Have a Summary at the Bottom

The first thing that you want to do is add a bullet-point summary at the bottom of your resume that includes all of your skills. This is a good way for you to include all of the buzzwords that a computer might be looking for if a company is using a computer to parse your resume and see if you have the basic skills that you need. It is also a good way to summarize what you have to offer to a recruiter. Feel free to make two or three columns of bullet-points if you are running out of room or if your skills are only one or two words each.

2. Add How Much Experience You Have

Once you have all of your skills listed at the bottom in bullet points, start by clarifying the amount of experience that you have. You have two options when it comes to this task. You can either say how long you have been working with a technology or performing a skill or you can give a general overview of how good you are at a skill. For example, if you are listing programming languages that you know and you have worked with Python briefly, you can say "some experience with Python." If you have been using Java professionally for three years, you can say "expert at Java." This will give companies a feel for how practiced you are at the skills they need.

3. Include Real World Examples

When you are talking about what your duties for your past jobs are or are describing person projects that you have done, make sure that you reference the skills you have listed below by name. For example, if you said you know Python, make sure that you include in your description of duties from your last job that you used Python for data science or automated scripting. This will make the list at the bottom feel more like a summary, rather than a bunch of unverified skills.
